Interview 18 – Nightmarish Conjurings

So I am a contributing writer for a horror website called Nightmarish Conjurings, created and managed by Shannon McGrew. With the site I am able to watch movies, review them, attend events, and interview filmmakers and actors – but this time I thought it would be great to interview Shannon herself!

1. How was the website Nightmarish Conjurings born?

Answer: It was honestly by accident. Four years ago I had just finished reading Stephen King’s “It” and was furious with certain aspects of it. Some friends suggested that I start to blog to not only talk about that book but also my love for the genre. I never thought it would be go anywhere and to my surprise it has.

2. Why do you think the genre of horror is so popular?

Answer: I think people like the rush. When watching horror a lot of the time we have that fight or flight response which can be addictive. I also think horror is underrated in the sense that it deals with a lot of real world issues whether it be politics, mental health, religion, etc. There’s a lot to uncover with a horror movie no matter if it’s a slasher flick or an art house film.

3. In the current political climate, what do you think it means to be a woman in horror?

Answer: So much haha. Let’s be honest, the genre is run by men – a lot of men who get an ego boost because they run a horror website that’s successful and they feel untouchable. Being a woman in this game is tough at times and I’ve had my run ins with people but I think a new dawn is coming in that more women are starting sites and writing articles and getting their voices heard. Women love horror just as much as men do and I think it’s important that we don’t try to silence that.

4. Do you have a favorite movie? Which one is it and why is it your favorite?

Answer: This is such a tough question! haha. I have a holy (or unholy trinity) that encompasses The Exorcist, The Thing, and Trick ‘r Treat, but if someone put a gun to my head and told me I had to pick one it would be The Exorcist. I’m a huge fan of religious based horror and The Exorcist just does it for me. It was made during a time when films such as that weren’t coming out and the shock it had on audiences is astounding. Even in 2018, with all the gore and special effects we have, The Exorcist still sends a chill down my spine.

5. If you could be killed by any horror villain, which one would it be and why?

Answer: No one is going to be surprised by this but it would be Sam from Trick ‘r Treat. I love him because he only kills those that desecrate Halloween and if I were to ever do that I would deserve his wrath. Plus, who doesn’t want to be killed by a lollipop?
