Pay Equity Study at IA Local 871

The film union, IATSE Local 871, did a pay equity study earlier this year that was just released, showing how female dominated positions within the film industry are paid less on average - because they are female! In this politically charged climate, it is important to understand the value of each person. It is important to understand the value of everyone no matter of race, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. When comes to the work place, qualified recipients come in all kinds of packages - and having a bias means you are losing out on valuable workers. I am part of this union, made of up script supervisors (continuity), production accountants, production office coordinators, assistant production office coordinators, art department coordinators, teleprompters, and recently script coo...

Interview 20 – Chris Roy

He was sentenced to life in prison at the age of 18. Now he is an author and a tattoo artist while living at the Mississippi Department of Corrections. 1. You are in prison? How did you get there? How long have you been there? And how long is your sentence? Yes. I was in the drug business with a Vietnamese street gang and had a disagreement over money with a ranking member. We were both teenagers, and not very bright ones. A fistfight occurred and he died from injuries. I've been incarcerated since January 6th, 2000, over half my life. I'm 18 years into a life sentence that gives me parole eligibility when I turn 65 years old. 2. Explain to me the process of writing your book? Story ideas come to me from conversations with people. Usually during banter that includes sick humor, fun threats...

Interview 19 – Holiday State

1) Tell us about how your band was formed? Well...we're brothers so we've always been playing music and singing and dancing around the house growing up. We've done some individual projects and been in other groups and bands together but it always involved other musicians as well. Those different projects ended just because a lot of the people we worked with weren't dedicated enough or didn't have the same goals in mind as we did. So in late 2014 we decided to start a group just the three of us and it's been good ever since. 2) How would you describe your music? Our music is a mixture of mostly country/pop. Very melodic, catchy hooks, meaningful lyrics, and 3 part harmonies. 3) What is the inspiration for your music? Life in general. Real stories. Good and bad situations, ups and downs rela...

Homophobia

June 11, 2018 - It is Pride month here in Los Angeles - as well as a few other cities across the US. Last weekend, as it was beautiful and warm here in Los Angeles, thousands of people came out to enjoy the sun, listen to music, and march down the main street of the city in celebration of diversity. In this recent political climate it seems many people feel empowered to not only express their fear of those that are different but lash out physically at them as well. It is very scary that there are those that can do harm to another human and feel no remorse. Or that they feel so privileged enough to attack violently. Growing up gay it was my fear that I would some day be assailed for being who I was. I did not expect to have that same fear in 2018. Neither did Jake Garcia, who was attacked l...

The Richard Wilmore Show

June 8, 2018 - I am a feature guest on The Richard Wilmore Show with Kateria Cozias. It was a video interview via Skype and I wasn't 100 percent prepared so I didn't get too dressed up! It was nice to talk about the podcast (as well as my own personal projects.)  Thank you Richard so much! It was a pleasure being on your show. The show is 30 minutes, two interviews that are 15 minutes each. I am the second interview. Please check it out! We look forward to having Richard on our show too! https://youtu.be/vCJHAclUC48

#RIP Jerry Maren

I had the great opportunity to see Jerry Maren years ago when he attended a screening of his film Dahmer vs Gacy that was screening at a horror festival I had helped launch. He was there with his wife Elizabeth (who sadly died not too long after) and a big plastic lollipop adorned with a colored bow. I found him charming and engaging - and growing up on The Wizard of Oz as all of us have, it was a true pleasure to meet him. He was a treasure no doubt and he will be missed. Thank you for the memories Jerry! I found this picture of the three of us that I have always cherished, as well as the video of the performance he did when he sang The Lollipop Guild to his wife! https://youtu.be/lmG61UqEHLI

After the Podcast with California Governor Appointee Keith Kirkwood

Keith Kirkwood takes off the jacket and sits for a few minutes to finish talking with host Michael Coulombe. We had a phenomenal podcast - and of course - we had to continue talking. This man has a lot of energy and is doing amazing things for the community. This was our first recorded podcast with video - which will go live on June 17, 2018 but when the interview was done he took of his jacket and we continued talking. I find Keith intriguing. Not that he is extremely handsome - because he is - but he has such a fascinating biography. Starting off as a print model, then was part of a boy band, made his way into politics...and is also a sponsored athlete....and above all that he is charming, passionate, and driven! https://youtu.be/EPXneXGy2M8 Mimosas with Michael on YouTube

Interview 18 – Nightmarish Conjurings

So I am a contributing writer for a horror website called Nightmarish Conjurings, created and managed by Shannon McGrew. With the site I am able to watch movies, review them, attend events, and interview filmmakers and actors - but this time I thought it would be great to interview Shannon herself! 1. How was the website Nightmarish Conjurings born? Answer: It was honestly by accident. Four years ago I had just finished reading Stephen King's "It" and was furious with certain aspects of it. Some friends suggested that I start to blog to not only talk about that book but also my love for the genre. I never thought it would be go anywhere and to my surprise it has. 2. Why do you think the genre of horror is so popular? Answer: I think people like the rush. When watching horror a lot of the ...
