Interview 9 – Danny Martinez

I ran into Danny on Instagram a year back. I was impressed by his flair. We chatted and became online friends. I was fascinated with him being both gay AND a wrestler. I mean, that is something you never – if ever – hear about.

So this week I would like to introduce you to Danny Martinez, also known as DJ Summers.

1. How do you feel about being known as a gay wrestler?

I knew right off the bat I couldn’t hide the fact that I’m flamboyant, so I decided to embrace it. at first I was afraid people wouldn’t take me seriously because I am gay, but thankfully the locker room and fans embraced it. I’ve never been seen as a “side show” gimmick either, which I hope I never get booked as that. I always tell people yes, I may be gay but that doesn’t determine how I am in the ring. I won’t ever try to molest you, I won’t ask you to pull punches. I’m there to put on a show and keep you safe, so book me for my ring ability rather than the gimmick.

2. What drew you to wrestling?

A childhood friend of mine was really big into it, so we played the video games together but I had no idea who any of the characters were. One day he turned it on and we watched it and I fell in love with the women; their outfits were always amazing and they weren’t afraid to put their bodies on the line. My mom was a single parent so anytime I see women empowerment, it warms my heart.
3. Is there a specific persona you have when in the ring?

DJ summers has gone through a couple changes. at first i was the male diva that wrestling our women, then I started wrestling the men but was very scared about messing up my face. now a days I am a narcissistic sasshole, that knows all the men want me and all the women want to be me.

4. How often do you train? How often do you fight?

I train two days a week If it’s not a show week, and I’ll have a match every other week practically.

5. What advice would you give to the young gay youth?

It gets better, people will hate on you and try to break you. Learn to love yourself because at the end of the day that’s what matters. if you are happy with who you are then own it, you’ll attract so many awesome people that way.
